What will the year 2011 bring in the area of power and politics ? It seems that more power and cynicism and less policies and rights for the ordinary citizen who pays taxes and brings votes.
In second day of this year, while there was still persist the image of fireworks over the Kremlin, Russian opposition leader Boris Nemtsov and Eduard Limonov were convicted to 15 days in prison. I asked what kind of reason was in the minds of those magistrates ? Isn’t a secret that Justice in Russian Federation is corrupt and thus vulnerable to pressures, more or less political. And this was clearly seen by the sentence imposed in case of former billionaire Khodorkovsky, at end of last year. Directly influencing the decision of the magistrates by in advance accusation speech of Premier Putin generated a soft warning from President Medvedev, and a summer storm in western offices. But in Nemtsov case, I think that can talk about a a new moment of many that led to the discrediting of opposition from Russia. The repeated arrests and dismissals of opposition leaders, and all included media circus, seems increasingly hard to impress someone. Even when human rights are flagrantly violated.
In another train of thoughts, on the other side of the planet in US, the tragic event in Tucson, Arizona (Rep. Gabrielle Giffords, was shot in the head last Saturday by a lone gunman) has generated all sorts of strange legislative proposals from American politicians. All this with the purpose and result a restriction of civil rights. U.S. – 200 million fire weapons in a population of 300 million inhabitants. Why politicians are so reserved to open discussion of a weapons law system? ”Because it is in the tradition of this country that people to have guns“ said a representative of the Republicans. “The Tucson shooting incident was, unfortunately, a tragedy that no amount of gun control is going to be able to stop” said Yih-Chau Chang, spokesman for gun-rights group Responsible Citizens of California. On the contrary, told that if someone from the crowd had a gun, then shot the attacker would have been faster and the number of victims would have been lower. Brilliant thinking ! 😀
However U.S. politicians are deeply concerned to decide what gestures or language may be placed on the list of offenses or crime against a high official. Mean fewer rights in the most democratic country in the world.
