Nightfall of «heavyweight» politicians from the old generation of Russian.Viktor Chernomyrdin died.

Former Russian Prime Minister Viktor Chernomyrdin died early on Wednesday morning at the age of 72, notice Ria Novosti. Chernomyrdin began his career in the Soviet Union as an ordinary worker, he ascended to plant director, member of the Central Committee of the Communist Party of the Soviet Union, and minister. During Mikhail Gorbachev’s perestroika, Chernomyrdin helped reconfigure his gas ministry as Gazprom and became chairman of its board of directors. After serving as Russian prime minister under President Boris Yeltsin from 1992-1998, Chernomyrdin was made Russian ambassador to Ukraine in 2001, a post he held until 2009, when he was designated as a presidential advisor.

When a old and truly important figure dies, mass media often called the end of an era. I heard the words at the death of Boris Yeltsin, Yegor Gaidar …
The same is happening now in the death of prominent figure of ex – PM Viktor Cernomyrdin. He wasn′t a ordinar politician. Was a statesman. In fact, we are witnessing the breakup of Russia by those who once contributed to the rise of the Soviet empire. Then in its decay and building a new Russia. Blames or praises for the professionalism, the old generation of Russian politicians retire in the pages of history books. Time and the historians will decide how important their presence in Russia’s transition to the millennium XXI. One thing is sure : we’re talking about careers and political experience built over time, and not built overnight because politicians PR tools. And this is a real loss.

Update: Former Russian Prime Minister Viktor Chernomyrdin will be laid to rest in Moscow’s Novodevichy Cemetery. Russian President Dmitry Medvedev plans to attend the ceremony to bid his last farewell to former Russian Prime Minister Viktor Chernomyrdin. Medvedev said Chernomyrdin was an extremely popular prime minister and a symbol of changes. “Viktor Stepanovich Chernomyrdin is no more. This is a great loss for our entire country. He was a symbol of the new Russia; together with our new country he made many different decisions, sometimes painful, and served his Motherland his entire life” the Russian leader said in a Kremlin address, quoted by Ria Novosti.
