How complicated are the reset ways of relations between Russian Federation and United States ! President Medvedev’s recent visit to the White House seemed to say that things are really on track. Only that… Sunday, 28 June 2010, Federal agents of FBI arrested 10 people, including three in New York and two in New Jersey. Richard Murphy and Cynthia Murphy, Vicky Pelaez, Anna Chapman, Michael Zottoli and Patricia Mills, Mikhail Semenko, Donald Howard Heathfield and Tracey Lee Ann Foley were accused of working undercover as secret agents for the Russian Federation in the United States, CBS 2 has learned.
In fact, the arrests were the result of a multi-year FBI investigation into an alleged network of U.S. based agents who concealed all connections between themselves and Russia.
“Eight of 10 were arrested Sunday for allegedly carrying out long-term, deep cover assignments in the United States on behalf of Russia. Two others were arrested for allegedly participating in the same Russian intelligence program within the United States. Their job, according to the court papers in the case, was “to search and develop ties in policymaking circles” in the United States. Each of the 10 was charged with conspiracy to act as an agent of a foreign government, which carries a maximum penalty of five years in prison on conviction. The cases were filed in U.S. District Court for the southern district of New York” said Pete Yost, journalist of Associated Press.
A suspect identified as “Christopher R. Metsos” remains at large.
The U.S. government intercepted a message from Russian intelligence headquarters in Moscow to two of the defendants, Richard and Cynthia Murphy. “You were sent to USA for long-term service trip” said the message from Moscow. “Your education, bank accounts, car, house etc. — all these serve one goal: fulfill your main mission, i.e. to search and develop ties in policymaking circles in US and sent intels” the message added. Interesting… Why such a message? Russian special services had problems with motivating their agents ? I look forward side of the offending party. And I suppose that will follow a traditional expulsion of Russian diplomats. And vice versa. As reset, will talking … In times of crisis even matter a classic case of espionage ?
